These data represent the documented intertidal spawning habitat for Pacific sand lance (Ammodytes hexapterus) in western Washington's marine waters. Sand lance, along with surf smelt (Hypomesus pretiosus) and Pacific herring (Clupea harengus) are collectively referred to as forage fish. They are important prey for many species of mammals, birds and fish, including salmon. Sand lance spawn in the upper intertidal zone of beaches comprised of mixed sand and gravel. These fine-grained spawning substrates are susceptible to nearshore development where substrate coarsening may reduce available habitat. The accurate representation of forage fish spawning habitat and delivery of those data to public sources is necessary for the conservation of these species.
<purpose>To document the distribution of intertidal spawning habitat for Pacific sand lance. These data provide guidence for protection and restoration activities.</purpose>
<supplinf>
The line segments portrayed in this feature class were derived from survey locations specified in the Forage Fish Survey Points feature class. The points were snapped to a routed shoreline based on Washington Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Shorezone Inventory. Arcs were generated from the routed shoreline for each survey point located within 200 feet of the shoreline. The arc length was based on the beach length attribute, with the point being the center of the arc.
Beach lengths were estimated in the field for surveys conducted after September 1991. Beach length estimates were sporadic for prior surveys. Where beach length estimates were missing, values were assigned based on the following method. First, a nearest point analysis was performed against surveys with beach length estimates. Beach length values were taken from the nearest survey point within a 750 foot buffer. Where no surveys occurred within the buffer, values of 1000 feet were assigned. The origin of the beach length value is represented in the Beach_Length_Src attribute.
Some spits, saltwater marshes, and other shoreline features that represent spawning habitat are not defined by the routed shoreline and thus not all documented sand lance spawning beaches are displayed in this feature class. These situations can be identified by using this layer in conjunction with the Forage Fish Survey Points feature class. The missing surveys for documented sand lance spawn can be displayed as points by selecting those Forage Fish Survey Points records whose Shoreline_Snap_Ind attribute value equals zero (0) and Sand_Lance_Ind attribute value equals one (1).

This data set is compiled from multiple sources. WDFW is not responsible for the accuracy of data collected by non-WDFW entities. Habitat conditions reflected in this data set may have changed since the data was collected and recorded.
The Forage Fish Survey Points feature class can be set to display survey points where sand lance spawning was documented by selecting the SAND_LANCE_IND attribute equal to one (1). The missing beaches will be displayed as points only rather than points and lines.

<horizpar>Positional data were derived using several methods over the duration of the sampling effort. Surveys conducted prior to September 1993 were plotted using 1:24000 USGS quadrangle maps and have an estimated accuracy of 100 meters or better. Surveys conducted between September 1993 and May 2000 utilized consumer grade GPS units and were subject to signal degradation from selective availability. These positions were compared to 1:24000 USGS quadrangle "field maps", where GPS positions deviated more than 61 meters from the field estimated positions, the field estimated positions were used. Accuracy is estimated to be within 100 meters. Surveys conducted since May 2000 utilized consumer grade GPS units with estimated accuracies of 15 meters. Accuracy of positional data received from groups or agencies outside the Department of Fish and Wildlife can not be guaranteed.</horizpar>
