The Marine Resources data, for the most part, have not been updated since the publication of the 1992 Technical Report No. 79. The exception to this is the foreage fish layers, which consist of herring spawning/holding areas, surf smelt, sand lance and rock sole spawning. They continue to be updated as surveys are conducted.

Dungeness and red rock crab populations occur along the Washington coast and in Puget Sound with occasional populations also associated with estuaries along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. They are found both nearshore and off the coast at depths in excess of 100m, depending on age and season. This layer continues to be updated as surveys are conducted. Polygons for the Subtidal Geoduck clams in Washington's inside marine waters were developed in a variety of ways. Surveys have been conducted to map subtidal locations of commercial quantities of several clam species. Technical Reports Nos. 13 and 14 (Goodwin 1973 a,b) describe the techniques and initial results of the diver surveys for subtidal geoduck and hardshell clam beds. Subsequent subtidal clam surveys have been oriented to locating beds that could be commercially harvested. They are, therefore, limited to subtidal areas &gt;18-20m. Polygons for Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas) areas in Washington's marine waters were developed in a variety of ways. The Pacific oyster is a Japanese species introduced into Washington State in the 1920s. Large populations of naturally produced and/or cultured Pacific oysters now exist in the protected waters of Willapa Bay, Grays Harbor, Hood Canal and south Puget Sound. Natural spawning is limited to only a few areas in Washington State, ex. Dabob and Quilcene Bays in Hood Canal and the southern end of Willapa Bay, because the Pacific oyster requires water temperatures above 18.1 C (65 F) to initiate spawning. Pacific oysters are also in the coastal estuaries of Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay. This layer does not cover the coastal estuaries, because it was originally produced to fulfill the requirements of the Puget Sound Environmental Atlas, published by the Washington Department of Natural Resources. Arcs for Razor clam populations on Washington's coast were developed in a variety of ways. Technical Reports Nos. 13 and 14 (Goodwin 1973 a,b) describe the techniques and initial results. Survey effort has been concentrated intertidally in locations where there are known clam beds and some areas have not been surveyed. Surveys have been conducted to map intertidal locations of Razor clams. Two species of razor clam are found all along the Washington coast Siliqua patula is found both intertidally on open sandy beaches and subtidally while S. sloati is only found subtidally. Continuous populations occur from Long Beach to Kalaloch with scattered populations found in pocket sandy beaches along the north coast to Hobuck Beach in Mukkow Bay. Razor clams are found from a mid-intertidal zone to a depth of about 20 m. Populations are typically densest in the lower intertidal zone but may also be substantial in the subtidal (surf) zone. Polygons for Pandalid Shrimp areas in Washington's marine waters were developed in a variety of ways. Four species of Pandalid Shrimp, pink (Pandalus jordani and P.borealis), coonstripe (P.danae), and spot prawn (P. platyceros) are commonly harvested in Washington's waters. Pink shrimp are caught all along the Washington coast from the northern portion of the Long Beach peninsula to the Canadian border. Most catches occur at depths ranging from about 100-220 m in areas where the bottom material is comprised of mud, sand, or shale. Within the inland waters, a large recreational and small commercial fishery for spot prawns in Hood Canal. Commercial and recreational fisheries for spot prawns and coonstripe shrimp also occur in Port Angeles Harbor, Port Susan and the San Juan Islands. In the Discovery Bay - Protection Island area, fisheries occur for all species. This layer continues to be updated as surveys are conducted. Polygons for the Sea Urchins in Washington's inside marine waters were developed by Alex Bradbury, WDF. Red and green sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus franciscanus and S. droebachiensis) occur in commercial quantities throughout the Strait of Juan de Fuca and San Juan Islands. They are also known to occur on Wahington's outer coast south at least to Portage Head (48°17.4'N). Presence/Absence data are generally lacking for the area south of Cape Flattery. Purple urchins also exist throughout the Strait of Juan de Fuca and may extend at least 125 km southward on the Washington coast. They are found from the low intertidal zone to depths of 100m (WDF Information Bulletin). This layer continues to be updated as surveys are conducted.

These data are part of the Marine Resources Database which is a collection of information concerning marine fish and shellfish resources in the coastal and inland marine waters of Washington State.</eaover>

Information on specific locations of some fish and wildlife species is considered sensitive and access to that information is restricted by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), Sensitive Fish and Wildlife Information Policy. If your request includes location information that is considered sensitive than you will be asked to sign a Sensitive Fish and Wildlife Release Agreement. This agreement indicates that the signatory (person or organization) recognizes the appropriate guidelines for disseminating Sensitive Fish and Wildlife Information and has agreed to the provisions of the policy.
Fish and wildlife sensitive location information displayed on maps, reports, digital data or other media are not for general distribution. Washington State Law (RCW 42.17.310) exempts Sensitive Fish and Wildlife Information from public inspection and copying.
The locations of species may change over time. WDFW updates information as additional data become available. WDFW does not recommend using maps or digital data more than six months old; please obtain updates rather than use outdated information.
